Blank Forging

Forging is the process of converting hot metal into a desired shape under pressure or impact. By using dies, the hot metal is formed into shape that have the appetite geometry machined onto the surfaces. To demonstrate the forging pre-form design, an axi-symmetric gear blank forging is used.

For Forged Shape....
  • Forged Parts for the Gear Industry
  • Trunnions, Couplings, single and double hubs, bevel gear blanks, flanges.
  • Rims, dough nuts, bull gears, seamless rolled rings, center hubs, gear blanks, pancake forgings.
  • Spindles, pinion shafts, rack forgings, step-downs.
For the Gears.....
  • Helical gears, spur gears and herringbone gears
  • Faces, internal gears and bevel gears
  • Worm gears, spiroid gears and hypoid gears
Advantage of Gear Blank Forging
Saving of material is the most prominent advantage of gear blank forging. It reduces the consumption of material since it requires less starting material for its shaped parts. Therefore, the cost of material needed for it also less. For example, without a forged torch cut part, the full center slug and all corner stock are lost. Even though, the user have to pay for the excess material, that is not even present in the torch. But, with a forged torch, the part is shaped to size in such a way, so that minimum wastes of material can occur.

Grain Flow Comparison of Gear Blank Forging with Others
Forged Bar
Through the forging process, the directional alignment has been oriented deliberately towards the direction requiring maximum strength. This feature also generates ductility and resistance to fatigue and impact.

Machined Bar
At the time of exposing grain ends, changing contour, the unidirectional grain flow has been cut. This make the material more sensitive to fatigue and stress corrosion cracking.

Cast Bar
Through the casting process, no directional strength and no grain flow is obtained.
