Head Stock

Head Stock is a part of stringed instruments, like guitar. Head Stocks are also referred as Peg Heads. Holding the strings of the musical instruments, is the main function of these Head Stocks. From the bridge, the strings go, pass through the nut and then fixed on machine head or head stock. With the help of the Head Stocks, the string's stress can be adjusted in the guitar. This adjustment is called as tuning of guitar. According to the stress adjustment, the pitch of sound is generated from a given guitar. As the Head Stocks are mainly used for tuning the tones, therefore, these are also called as tuners of guitars.

Construction Details
There are two traditional layouts of tuners. The first layout is called as “3+3”, in which there are 3 top tuners and 3 bottom tuners. The second layout is called as “6 in line” tuners. Apart from these two layouts, there are many other combination of layouts present. These other layouts are specially found in the brass guitars and in the 6-string guitars.

In some guitars, there is no Head Stock (tuner) present in the guitar or even if these are present, these are located on the guitar body. Example of such type of guitars are Steinberger guitar or Chapman stick model of guitars.

Types of Head Stock
There are two ways for meshing of head stocks in guitars. These head stocks may be carved separately on the gears or these can be glued to neck of the guitars by using some sort of joints. Depending upon the style of passing of the strings through the nut, the constructional trends of the head stock depend. There are two trends of construction of head stocks. Certain advantages and disadvantages are present in both the trend and it is a debatable matter that which trend is better. Both the trends of construction are given below:
  • Straight head stocks from a single plane with a flat surface of neck. In this trend, the manufacturing of head stocks and neck is simple. From a single piece of wood, the head stock and neck can be manufactured.
  • In the second trend, the head stock is manufactured from some acute angle with the surface of the neck. The range of the acute angle varies from 3° to 25°. The value of the acute angle is called as “head stock pitch”. The head stoke pitch gives the best tone, but it is contradictory that at which angle the best tone is available.
