A sequential gearbox, also known
as a sequential manual transmission, is popularly used in the automobile
industry for faster, smoother and easier shifting of gears up or down.
Sequential transmission makes use of rotation of a drum to switch
gears. These gearboxes have a narrower casing for easier installation
and have wider and stronger gears with sliding arrangement. This type of
manual transmission is specially designed for high-speed and
high-performance driving or car racing.
Working Procedure
This type of manual transmission works by allowing selection of the
gear directly before or after the gear currently engaged, with the help
of a button or movement of a lever.
The gearbox is specially designed for high reliability in extreme
temperature, high vibration and shock environments.
Advantages of a Sequential Gearbox
- The gearbox is quicker as compared to the "H" pattern
gears.
- The gearbox is consistent. It has the same motion with every
gear.
- The gearbox has the shift lever in the same place for the next
shift.
- The gearbox reduces the risk of blowing up engine due to
mis-shift.
- The gearbox takes up less space.
